AAPT standardizes on VMware to reduce its hardware costs

SYDNEY, Australia, July 14, 2008 - VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter, today announced Australian telecommunications company AAPT, will deploy VMware's market-leading datacenter virtualization and management suite, VMware Infrastructure 3 (VI3), to dramatically reduce its server numbers from 300 to 13. Using VMware, AAPT expects to cut hardware costs substantially and reduce the environmental impact of its datacenter through server consolidation.

David Yuile, AAPT GM Networks and Technology, said AAPT's decision to invest in virtualization was driven by the need to upgrade its ageing server line-up and reduce its carbon footprint by using less power.

"As part of AAPT's ongoing commitment to developing an environmentally sustainable workplace, we were investigating opportunities to substantially cut energy costs by reducing our total number of servers. VMware Infrastructure will be instrumental in helping us achieve our goals," said Yuile.

AAPT is working with IT outsourcing partner, EDS, to modernize the company's IT infrastructure and increase its datacenter's IT efficiency and utilization. AAPT plans to use VMware Infrastructure to consolidate more than 90 percent of its 300 Sun Microsystems servers.

"We see virtualization as a core component of our IT strategy," added Yuile. "We chose VMware and Sun because of their experience with virtualization, where no other vendors could match our needs."

This is the first major agreement signed in the Australia-Pacific region following VMware's OEM deal with Sun Microsystems, member of EDS Agility Alliance.

"VMware and its partners are helping many organizations like AAPT transform the way their datacenter operates by delivering the significant benefits of virtualization such as reduced capital and operating costs," said Paul Harapin, managing director, Australia and New Zealand, VMware. "The savings, coupled with the positive environmental impact virtualization provides, helped fuel the growing adoption rate of virtualization in Australia and New Zealand."

AAPT's new virtualization system will be installed, maintained and supported by EDS Australia and New Zealand.
